§ 1 /Who is responsible

§ 2 /Data stored on your device
Rarely has no accounts, and it contains no analytics and no crash reporting. The following data is stored on your iPhone; apart from the anonymous data described in § 3 and what you send in a duel (see Duels), none of it is sent to us:
- Your rounds, answers and points, your streak and your history
This data is deleted when you delete the app, unless you are signed in to iCloud (see iCloud backup).
§ 3 /Anonymous answers
After each round, Rarely sends your answers together with the question, the language and the day of the round to our server, so we can measure rarity from real answers and add correct answers that are still missing. The server keeps only how often an answer occurs, with no time and no day per answer. Nothing in it identifies you: no device ID, no account and no advertising identifier.
As with any connection over the internet, your IP address reaches the server. Cloudflare hosts the server and processes the IP address only to deliver the request and to limit how many requests a single connection can send; we do not store or log it. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in running the server reliably (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Details: Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
What is sent is what you type, so please do not enter personal information such as your name.
Because the data cannot be linked to you, we cannot look up or delete individual entries.
§ 4 /In-app purchases
Purchases (Rarely Plus) are processed by Apple through the App Store; we never receive your payment details. The app checks with Apple that it was installed from the App Store. See Apple Privacy Policy.
§ 5 /Sharing
If you share your round result or a duel link from Rarely, the app hands a short text to the iOS share sheet; where it goes is up to you.
§ 6 /iCloud backup
If you are signed in to iCloud, Rarely keeps a copy of your progress (rounds, answers, points, streak and a few settings) in the private iCloud database of your own Apple Account, so it comes back after reinstalling or on another device. Only you can read it; we have no access. Apple’s privacy policy applies: apple.com/legal/privacy. Without iCloud, nothing is synced. You can turn it off in your iPhone’s Settings → Apple Account → iCloud.
§ 7 /Duels
If you challenge a friend, the app sends your nickname, the day and language of the round, your answers and points to our server, which creates a link with a six-character code. When your friend plays, the same is stored for them. We store the code, language, day, question IDs, both nicknames, the answers (at most 200 characters each), points and the times the duel was created, expires and was played; no device ID and no IP address. Nicknames and answers are only visible to people who have the link. Duels are deleted after 30 days. Choose a nickname that does not reveal who you are if you prefer.
§ 8 /Your rights
You can ask what personal data we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, restrict its processing and lodge a complaint with a data protection authority. Apart from duels, which are deleted after 30 days, our server for this app keeps only anonymous totals that cannot be linked to you, so we usually hold no personal data about you; data processed by Cloudflare or Apple is subject to their policies linked above. § 9 /Children
Rarely is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the third-party services used by the app, please contact us so we can act on it.
§ 10 /Changes
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes are posted on this page with a new date at the top.
